One of the most important skills I have learned

Published on 09 November 2021

As a web developer I do a lot of typing. For a long time I was a two finger typist. I was quite fast but it wasn’t very efficient. It was fair to say that typing was an obstacle at times.

There is a lot more to the job than just typing. There is a lot of thinking involved, which makes it all the more important for my typing to not get in the way. Now when I’m trying out a solution to a problem, typing out the code doesn’t hinder that process.

If you’re a developer/engineer/programmer, or any other profession which involves spending a significant amount of time at a keyboard, learning to touch type is an invaluable skill.

There are plenty of resources online that can help you to learn this skill. The one I used and highly recommend was TypingClub.

The other benefit to touch typing is that I can still work when my cat decides to lay on my arms to get the heat from my laptop.

This post is part of a series of posts in which I write and publish a blog post every day throughout November 2021. There are no constraints on the project and the posts don’t neccissarliy have any connection to each other.

See all of the posts in the 30 days of writing project.
